Penarth Town Council has accepted Gwyrddio Penarth Greening's (GPG) application for financial assistance.

The local environmental group will receive £248.39 to help fund its "Growing Together" network.

It aims to "support people who live in Penarth to use a space in their gardens for growing food or to support wildlife and nature".

A large bulk of the sum (£103) will be spent on wildflower seeds, while much of the rest will go towards promoting the scheme.

It will be allocated from the Town Council's Community Financial Assistance budget, which currently stands at £2020.

Details of costs:

Wildflower seeds from Naturescape - £103

100 envelopes - £4.95

100 printed labels - £19.44

100 stickers - £77

Mix of seeds from Ediculture - £20

Coir compost - £24

"It was a very nice surprise yesterday," Eurgain Powell, who leads the initiative, told Nub News.

"People can become overwhelmed when they hear about biodiversity loss, so if a few people get together locally and do a few positive things we can help make a difference."

During Thursday's Council meeting, Cllr Ian Buckley said:

"I would like to support this not only because of the climate emergency that we're facing but also because it will help people who are struggling with mental health, anxiety and depression to get outside and have some growing space."

This comes a month after newly planted trees in Wordsworth Park were cut down in what appears to be an ongoing campaign targeting environmentalism in Penarth.

In December, thieves destroyed the Wordsworth Park Community Garden.
