The community fruit garden in Wordsworth Park has been targeted by thieves just a week after the project began.

Gwyrddio Penarth Greening (GPG), a local environmental group, had begun planting the community garden a fortnight ago after receiving a 'Fruit Garden Pack' from the charity Keep Wales Tidy.

Volunteers met on Saturday morning for first week of digging and installation. But Eurgain Powell (who leads the GPG's 'Growing Community' initiative) was today informed that their work had been undone.

The decorative banner was stolen alongside four wooden panels that form the raised bed. The group say it is unlikely that the project will be able to continue.

"We're really gutted that this has happened," Eurgain told Nub News.

"We will have to contact Keep Wales Tidy and the Council to ask their advice but I think it's looking unlikely that we'll be able to continue."

Speaking on the first day of the project (Saturday 7 December), Eurgain had voiced her concerns that vandals might target the garden.

But she says this does not make the reality any less painful.

"We've tried to engage with local residents and there seemed to be lots of support for going ahead with the community garden.

"We've spent lots of time and energy on this - applying for the pack from Keep Wales Tidy, and organising everything. It's just heartbreaking to see it destroyed after less than two days.

"My son, Daniel, who helped write the banner and build the raised bed just keeps asking me: 'Who would do that? Who would take it? Why have they done this?'"
