Penarth Civic Society Annual Cheese and Wine Evening
St Augustine's Hall, Albert Road
Miscellaneous
UNTIL Thursday 17th October

Wrecks, wreckers and the disappeared……
This talk will examine a random selection of the thousands of vessels that have been wrecked or disappeared in the upper Bristol Channel. As we walk along Windsor Gardens on a pleasant summer's day we look across to Weston and Clevedon over a sea that is often as calm as a duck pond, but the Channel can be a dangerous and treacherous waterway.
Alan will go back beyond the opening of Penarth docks and then tell us about ships that have been lost since then, particularly in the days of sail, when they did not have their own means of powering an escape.
He will address the often asked question of whether there were "wreckers", who lured ships on to rocks in order to steal their cargo and tell us about many unfortunate maritime disasters.
We will also learn of the brave Coastguards and Lifeboatmen who risked their lives to try to save the crews of the vessels in distress.
Entry to this event is £5.00 for members and £8.00 for non members, all attending will receive a complimentary glass of wine (or soft drink) and a selection of cheese and biscuits.
Doors open at 6.40PM
