Join us this December to hear acclaimed art history lecturer, Stella Grace Lyons's fascinating talk on Pieter Breugel the Elder.
Plump little people dressed in heavy winter clothes huddle amongst falling snowflakes. Women cook pancakes as children play with spinning tops. The people of the village dance and eat street food as part of a manic, boozy knees-up.
Bruegel painted humanity. His paintings are worlds you can enter, with enough detail to keep you entertained for hours.
Despite being nearly 500 years old, his works are not old masters out-of-touch with our times. They still speak to us today: his characters party, brawl, flirt, gossip, and kiss, against a backdrop of political turmoil.
This talk will explore the comedy and horror of this pioneering 16th Century Netherlandish master.
'Without sacrificing scholarship, Stella Grace Lyons has a most engaging way of hooking an audience into sharing her passionate interest in art history, drawing three dimensional human stories and experiences from the two-dimensional canvas'
- Maev Kennedy, Guardian Arts Correspondent
Following the talk, please stay for tea and cake, served in the Pavilion's beautiful Gallery.
