An Amazon account, a little bit of money and some determination to show their support for key workers and the NHS. That is how Tony Hughes described his journey in lighting up the barrage blue.

As a Cardiff Harbour Authority employee, and a Penarth resident, Tony Hughes had the platform to deliver the display and the motivation to show the town's support during these troubling times.

Last week, Penarth Nub News reported on the first instalment of blue lights at the barrage control buildings.

This Thursday, after the clap for our carers, we visited the control rooms, and Mr Hughes, to find out a bit more about how it all came together.

Tony Hughes explained that he had seen the blue lights on the Cardiff Bay side of the barrage and wanted to replicate that but facing Penarth.

Living near Northcliffe, he also managed to secure the old summerhouse for this week's display, illuminating our town's landscape.

Tony is an essential worker and so he has remained at the control room offices throughout the pandemic, whilst maintaining safe social distancing measures.

He really wanted a way to show his support for all the key workers in the UK, especially those in the NHS.

He said the message of staying home and protecting our key workers was extremely important and he thought that this could go some way in displaying it.

Mr Hughes ordered the lights from Amazon and after a bit of a tester last Thursday he went bigger and better this week.

The old summerhouse, which was included in the display, is close to where he lives and so he was able to set this up before work and controlled the lights from his mobile phone.

He plans to do this every week if the appetite is there and hopes to have a few more bits and pieces to add as lockdown continues.

Tony said he has achieved all of this whilst adhering to all of the social distancing measures and respecting the rules of the coronavirus pandemic.

He explained that it was extremely important people stay at home and save lives and he hopes the blue lights will go even further in highlighting this locally.

Photos of the lights can be seen above. Mr Hughes regularly shares images with the Penarth community from the stunning backdrop of his offices.

He said: ''I know a lot of people can't get out and about so I share them with the community.''
