Bruce Wallace: The Hong Kong - a history of Salop Street and its connections to the maritime history of the town
Thursday February 16th
7 to 8.30pm.
Bruce is also well known to us and has given several talks in the past.
You may be forgiven for wondering why a Chinese takeaway would be a subject of one of his talks, but this "Hong Kong" was the nickname given to a shop in Salop Street, named after the large wooden loose tea chests which were stamped with Hong Kong.
Bruce's family has lived in Salop Street since the late 19th century. The Hong Kong was a part of the street now rebuilt as Salop House but which for 100 years was known by that name after it was used as a storage depot for a wholesale tea supplier from the far east.
He will also be introducing us to various characters who lived in the street, many of whom had jobs as coal trimmers or dockers in Penarth docks.
The talk will be a series of projected images and a few pieces of text which he will speak to, and invite others to respond to as well.
