Vale of Glamorgan Council is working with South Wales Police to identify those responsible for the vandalism of a Penarth bench.

Local artist David Mackie and around 120 pupils from Albert Road and Cogan primary schools collaborated to create a bespoke bench in Dingle Park with a wildlife theme.

Images from nature, including those of birds, butterflies and ants, have been etched onto hardwood, reflecting animals native to the area.

It also depicts mythical creatures such as elves to spark discussion while visitors sit down and take a break.

Recently, the artwork was ruined after being tagged with yellow and blue spray paint.

The council's Parks Team and Mr Mackie are currently assessing how best to go about removing the graffiti.

This matter has also been reported to South Wales Police.

Cllr Mark Wilson, Vale of Glamorgan Council cabinet member for neighbourhood and building services, said: "This is an appalling act of vandalism, one that the Council is not prepared to simply accept.

"The bench is in fact a carefully crafted sculpture, the result of hours of hard work by David Mackie and local schoolchildren.

"It is designed to enrich the local community so to see it treated this way is extremely upsetting for everyone involved.

"Such behaviour will not be tolerated. We are working with Police to find those responsible and will take the strongest possible action when we do."

Anyone with information can report it online, quoting the crime number 2300241382.
