"Wrong side!" - Royal Mail contractors install protective canopy under area already fixed
Yesterday afternoon, Royal Mail sent contractors to 41 Albert Road, the Deco Cafe building. They installed a canopy designed to protect the public from falling concrete.
This comes after a large block dislodged from the building's first floor lintel in December 2020. The cafe's manager, Debra Lock, has been demanding such action be taken for six months.
However, Mrs Lock was exasperated to find that the contractors had installed the canopy in what she believes to be the "wrong place". The canopy is situated beneath the area of lintel already fixed by contractors last month.
"I have never known the town centre so quiet" - Struggling traders urge return to high street
Penarth traders have expressed grave concern over the reluctance of residents to return to the high street amid the easing of COVID-19 restrictions.
Many shop owners say emerging from this lockdown sorely lacks the sense of solidarity and commitment to shopping local that they experienced in the summer.
They urge shoppers to get out and give their socially distanced support to local businesses if they feel safe to do so.
Irlen Syndrome: Cogan woman campaigns to raise awareness for contentious condition
When Hannah Louise Miller first put on a pair of purple-tinted glasses, her life was immediately transformed.
"It was like my whole world changed completely," she says. "Everything was so much better.
"My Irlen affects how I see the environment. I have depth perception issues and light sensitivity and I get headaches from it.
Ian Buckley elected as new Mayor of Penarth
Councillor Ian Buckley was been chosen as Mayor of Penarth in today's Annual General Meeting, which took place with reduced attendance in Turner House and was broadcast online.
As Mayor, the Cornerswell Labour Party Councillor will become the 'First Citizen' of Penarth. This entails ceremonial duties, acting as the public face of the Council, and representing the Council at official and community events.
Cllr Laura Rochefort, also of Cornerswell ward, was elected as this years Deputy Town Mayor.
Benthyg 'Library of Things' reaches 100 items in under a month
Benthyg Penarth, a "library of things" that allows residents to borrow donated items for a small fee, has gotten off to a flying start.
Based out of Clockyard at Rowley's on Glebe St, the scheme opened on 23 April and has already received 100 items as donations from members of the public. Over 80 people have signed up to borrow them.
A local place where people can donate items they don't need and borrow items for a fixed period of time is clearly a popular idea, with obvious environmental and economic benefits.
