Cardiff South and Penarth Member of Senedd (MS) Vaughan Gething has been appointed Welsh Government Economy Minister in today's cabinet shuffle.

Eluned Morgan has been been named Minister for Health and Social Services, the role Mr Gething served for five years and, notably, throughout the pandemic.

He now faces the daunting task of leading Wales' economic recovery from COVID-19.

"Vaughan becomes Economy Minister at a crucial point in time," First Minister Mark Drakeford said. "The pandemic is not just a public health emergency but also an economic one."

This comes after Mr Gething retained his Senedd seat in last week's election, receiving 49.9% of the vote.

Following his re-election, Mr Gething told Nub News that he still harbours First Ministerial ambitions after being defeated by Mr Drakeford in 2018's leadership contest.

"It's not a secret that I haven't given up on [leading the Welsh party in the future]," he said. "But it is a long way into the future and there's a lot of hard yards to travel before we get there."

We are awaiting comment from Mr Gething following his appointment as Economy Minister.
