A Penarth sports club has raised more than £15,000 for a cancer charity – and is moving on to another fundraising challenge.
Penarth Lawn Tennis Club volunteers spent a year raising the cash for Velindre Hospital with a host of events, sponsored challenges, and fundraising stalls.
Now members have set a new challenge – to raise money for the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).
"We're delighted to be helping the MNDA to help people in south Wales who are living with this terrible condition," a club spokesperson said.
"The money will go to local families in the Vale and Cardiff and into research which aims to find a treatment."
The club has already raised more £1,500 for the charity by holding a musical evening, a curry night and by selling mulled wine at the annual fireworks event.
Other planned events include a coffee morning, a junior fun day, a 24-hour tennisathon as well as fundraising stalls at the club's major events – the Music and Street Food Festival and next year's bonfire night.
Kate Bryon from the Cardiff and Vale branch of the MNDA said: "We're delighted that the club is supporting us in our work. We rely on donations to enable us to reach out and help local people struggling with MND and to fund research.
"We're looking forward to the cub's events over the coming year."
Last year's total of £15,000 was raised through events including a picnic, a social tennis tournament and some high profile sponsored events. Club member James Linney broke a world record by running the Cardiff Half Marathon bouncing a tennis ball, while another member Alan Cozens cycled from north Wales to Penarth. He's planning a new north to south challenge for this year's MNDA fundraiser.
Club events have also raised £7,000 for a charity helping civilians caught up in the Ukraine war and £2,000 for the Marie Curie hospice in Penarth.
