Friends of St Augustine's Autumn Quiz report

It was with some trepidation that Friends of St Augustine's Quiz night set out on heir latest quiz, not knowing if many would be put off by the rather inclement weather.

However, organisers were delighted to have to put out more tables to a final total of nine; by the time the event started at 7:30, there were a total of 46 participants, all raring to go.

The format was slightly different to past quizzes, in that two ten question sheets had already been set out on each table.

These constituted Round G, ten photographs of well-known sports personalities (with possibly -1 awarded to any team who didn't get the first one - Gerald Davies) and Round H, a ten part compilation featuring questions based on Penarth history and current aspects of the town. Teams were able to study and answer these throughout the whole period of the quiz.

The main part of the quiz then consisted of six rounds, on subjects as diverse as 'Advertising Slogans' (can you remember what DIY product does 'exactly what it says on the tin'?), a music round (what was the first Beatles' single release to get into the charts?) and a quotations round (who said 'To err is human; to forgive, divine'?).

While on the latter subject, it was pointed out that there were only three mispronouncements from the Chair: Fado (Portuguese), Trelew (Welsh) and the original name of Sophia Loren - go on, you look it up and try!

Each round took some 15 minutes to complete, including giving out the answers and marking, the latter being done by an adjacent team, to avoid any misunderstandings in this aspect (surely not….).

A raffle with loads of prizes was drawn after the first three rounds, to give everyone a break and to allow brains to recover somewhat. Final tallies were then completed and the winners announced: the table with 64 points, followed closely by three other teams all within two points. Overall, a pretty close contest!

Many thanks to all the Friends whose efforts made it a most enjoyable evening, along with all the attendees.

Another quiz is planned for late Spring, so keep your eyes out for the posters.
