Dinas Cricket Club Round Up

By The Editor 22nd Jul 2019

The 1sts's torrid 2019 season continued on Saturday as they went down by 8 wickets to local rivals Sully Centurions at Burnham Avenue.

Despite heavy rain in the days before, the pitch was reasonably dry and Curtis Wingren, the fifth player taking the 1st XI skipper's reins this season, expected Sully to bat but they chose to bowl.

On a pitch that despite looking good offered variable bounce, the Dinas batter never got going and all 10 wickets went to catches - quite a lot of them fairly tame shots.

Only opener Lloyd DiMauro (34) and Alun Harris (27) offered much resistance, and only two others made it to double figures.

In the end, Dinas succumbed in the 42nd over for a total of 133, which never looked like being enough.

In reply, the typically belligerent Rhett Jones (55) and opening partner Chaulk (35) made short work of some friendly Dinas bowling before Chaulk was run out by Wingren, and Jones eventually fell, stumped by Gordon Hannah of Gihan Fernando.

No more wickets fell as Sully romped home in just 23.4 overs leaving Dinas glued firmly to bottom spot in Divison 3 of the South East Wales Cricket League and 29 points away from safety.

Sully Centurions conceded their game against Dinas 2nds late on Saturday morning, unable to raise a side.

The 3rds travelled to St Fagans to take on the west Cardiff outfit. The home team won the toss and elected to bat, racking up a monstrous 301-5, with Richard Elliott making 103.

The 3rds toiled well in the field, and there were 2 wickets for Nathan Waite (2-48) and one apiece for Olly Hurley (1-35) and skipper Gareth Storey (1-59) and a run out from Richard Morgan.

In reply, Dinas, with the usual mixture of youth and experience eventually did well to get to 153 all out, with a solid 40 from Morgan, and 35 from Will Palmer the stand outs.

Whilst this was a heavy defeat, much praise must go to the club for continuing to get a 3rd XI out when some other clubs are struggling to get 2 sides out, and to the youngsters who are coming through the ranks at Dinas.

Players like Ryan Mullins and Nathan Waite the older teenagers, who are not only performing well and taking on roles and responsibilities within the club, but also to up and coming younger teenagers like Will Paler, Olly Hurley and Will McConkey.

Next Saturday's matches:

  • 1's v Vale CC (home - Bryn y Don 12.30pm)
• 2's v Crumlin (away)
  • 3's v Barry Wanderers 2's (away - Hayes Point 1pm)
