Dinas Cricket Club Weekly Round Up

Local Sport by The Editor 29th Jul 2019

Top of the table Vale CC travelled to Bryn Y Don on Saturday to play a Dinas 1st XI anchored at the bottom of the league.

Current form suggested there was only one likely outcome, and so it proved.

Invited to bat first against a strong bowling attack, Dinas lost 2 early wickets before a 64 run partnership between Kyle Hughes and Curtis Wingren got them back into the game.

Indeed with the score at 100/3 at the halfway stage of their innings, a total in excess of 200 seemed likely.

However, the innings lost momentum as Wingren saw little of the strike, and he was eventually out for 58.

Jason Harries added an entertaining 24, but Dinas were bowled out in the 41st over for 178.

Two dropped catches in the 4th over of the Vale innings was as close as it got for Dinas, as openers Alex Upham with 74 and Matthew Thomas with 90 raced to a 10 wicket victory in only 27 overs.

Dinas 2nd's march onwards after their latest victory vs Crumlin. Crumlin won the toss and elected to bat, but the Dinas bowlers took wickets regularly as Crumlin were bowled out for 167.

Lewis Clarke took 3-11, and there were wickets also for Rhys Lloyd (2-10), Olly Coughtrey (2-21) and Jack Houghton (2-10), with John Clogg taking 1-28.

In reply Nathan Bennett held the Dinas innings together with a fine unbeaten 82, with contributions from Dylan Rees (25), Clarke (19) and Richard Morgan (10).

With 13 matches gone, the 2nds lie 2nd behind Vale CC.

A remarkable game played out at Hayes Point where Dinas 3rds took on Barry Wanderers 2nds.

Batting first Wanderers scored 214 but were all out due to some fine bowling by youngsters Jacob Hatcher (4-9) and Nathan Waite (4-48), with Chairman Rob Tucker nipping in with 2-39.

A big ask for the second innings then, and things looked perilous for the Villagers when they were 24-4 with Cliff depass, Andy Palmer, Olly Hurley and Patrick Dickinson all back in the hutch.

But veterans Tucker and Geoff Colley had other ideas as a huge partnership clawed Dinas back into the frame.

With Colley gone, more wickets fell, and when last man Geoff Marlow joined Tucker, there was still more than 50 needed.

With gas running out of the tank, the Chaiman stood and delivered, including one huge over that went for 27.

Marlow stuck around for 6* as the Chairman saw the Villagers home by a wicket with a personal best for the club of 118 not out.

Next Saturday's matches:

  • 1's away v Ebbw Vale
  • 2's home (Bryn y Don) v Vale 2's 1pm
  • 3's home (Common) v Ebbw Vale 2's 1pm
