Tributes have been paid to Penarth's former mayor, John Fraser, who has died.

The cause of Mr Fraser's death has not been revealed. Mr Fraser was elected as Penarth's mayor in 2009/10 and was first elected to the town council in 2004.

Andrew RT Davies, leader of the Welsh Conservatives, said: "John was a passionate servant of Penarth, working exceptionally hard for his constituents in the Cornerswell ward on both the Vale of Glamorgan and Penarth town councils.

"He served the town diligently in 2009/10 during his time as mayor and was always strongly supported by his wife and consort Jude.

"John will be deeply missed by us all. The thoughts and prayers of everyone at the Welsh Conservatives are with his family at this difficult time."

Leighton Rowlands, former mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan Council and chairman of the Vale of Glamorgan Conservatives Association, added: "I'm deeply saddened to hear the passing of John Fraser. John was a committed councillor and town mayor - he will be missed.

"My thoughts are with his family."
