Support for unpaid carers is topic of council discussion
By Guest 24th Apr 2026
THE plight of carers across the Vale was highlighted at a Dinas Powys Community Council meeting.
Chair Jon Cowpe welcomed Mike O'Brian of the Carers charity Voices ADFOCADO to the meeting. He told community councillors of the stresses unpaid carers face. He said that there are 310,000 unpaid Carers in Wales.
Mr O'Brian said that it is very difficult for unpaid carers to obtain sufficient support from social services departments.
He suggested that a register of unpaid carers should be drawn up with pharmacies and GP surgeries. Cllr Anne Asbrey was told a register would provide a one stop shop for support.
Cllr John Fanshaw said that the Vale Council should engage with local GP surgeries. Cllr Marianne Cowpe considered that greater use of pharmacies would be a benefit.
Community councillors were left with a feeling of concern for unpaid carers particularly with regard to respite care.
