Sully in Storm Jorge: Horses Stuck in Flooded Fields and Road Closures

29th Feb 2020 | Local News

Sully was one of the areas most affected by the floods brought about by the arrival of Storm Jorge. From submerged vehicles to flooded roads and horses stuck in deep water, the community has taken a real hit.

Residents have expressed concern for at least three horses that are currently trapped in Sully Moors field along a closed road.

The RSPCA has been contacted but is currently unable to access the horses due to the accessibility issues.

Local residents have gone down to see if they can help but the water is currently too deep for them to get close enough.

Hayes Road, a major road linking Sully and Barry, and Sully Moors Road are also closed due to floodwaters with vehicles submerged in the area.

The Barry recycling centre is not open due to road closures.

Flooding in Sully, today from 9:10 am - 19:10 pm, means that Cardiff Bus will currently be diverting via Dinas Powys instead. A temporary shuttle bus is operating between Penarth Town Centre and Sully Church roundabout. Affected routes: 94 and 94B.

South Wales Police said: ''The critical incident declared following flooding and severe weather-related incidents have now been stood down.

''Please be reassured that agencies continue to work together and everything is still being done to ensure the safety of the public and emergency services are coping with the pressure placed upon them.

''The situation will be monitored throughout the day, and agencies remain prepared if further issues arise.

Advice for people in affected areas:

• Remain indoors, unless your journey is absolutely necessary.

• Steer well clear of dangers such as waterways.

• In an emergency, dial 999 – let highly skilled emergency service and rescue staff deal with incidents safely.

• Monitor local media and social media accounts for relevant organisations for updates.
