Following flooding and severe weather-related incidents which have occurred overnight and through the course of the morning, a critical incident has been declared by South Wales Police and they are coordinating a multi-agency response.

Videos, like the one above, picture the severe flooding that occurred on Lavernock Road in Penarth yesterday evening at the peak of the weather issues.

South Wales Fire and Rescue Service has taken a total of 72 calls between 6 pm last night and 6 am this morning.

The public can be reassured that everything is being done to ensure their safety and emergency services are coping with the pressure placed upon them.

Superintendent Andy Kingdom, Gold commander, said: ''I would like to thank all our emergency services and partners for their assistance and professionalism.

''Indications are that the rain is set to stop and river levels will soon recede. There is still significant surface water and debris on the roads throughout the force area so we would advise people only to travel if absolutely necessary.

Public Advice for people in affected areas:

• Steer well clear of dangers such as waterways.

• Monitor local media and social media accounts for relevant organisations for updates.
