Penarth RNLI was called soon after 11 pm to reports of someone in difficulty by the pier.
Both lifeboats were launched and the smaller D class lifeboat effected rescue.
The person was then taken to the boathouse.
A spokesperson for Penarth RNLI said: ''We don't know the circumstances of how he came to be there, so we can't speculate.
''The staff in yacht club were great, raising the alarm as were the emergency service, police ambulance and Penarth coastguard team.
''The person was taken to hospital for checks and of course we wish him a speedy recovery.''
Penarth Yacht Club made a statement on Facebook that said: ''The club want to give a big well done to Cliff (General Manager) and Mark (Deputy Manager) tonight (Friday)
''Mark, walking on his way home from work, noticed someone in trouble under the pier and notified 999 which notified coastguard and Penarth RNLI.
''Mark phoned Cliff after his 999 called to let him know what was happening and he attended the station to assist where he could.
''Cliff attended the station tonight on his first shout as shore crew and he helped with launching the Atlantic and D class boats to the person needing help.
''We are delighted that Cliff is now a volunteer member with the RNLI and is following on from the previous Steward Huw who is still an active Crew member.
''A massive well done to all volunteers of the RNLI and as a club, we are delighted to support and be involved in everywhere possible.''
