Volunteers in Penarth are hoping to raise thousands of pounds for victims of the war in Ukraine with a live music event.

The music event will take place at Penarth Lawn Tennis Club on June 25 and will raise money for the New Life Foundation in Siret, a charity based at the Romania/Ukraine border, which has been shipping much-needed supplies across the border to Ukraine.

The event, which follows the sell-out Music and Street Food Festival at the club, will feature four live bands, a barbeque, as well as fun and games for the kids. There will also be a raffle with prizes donated by local businesses.

The New Life Foundation was set up 30 years ago by British volunteers to help Romanian orphans. It is now turning its attention to helping Ukraine.

"We are focusing our efforts on transporting crucial aid – medical supplies, non-perishable food and baby food, among other supplies – into Ukraine every week," said event organiser and Penarth resident, Jez Thomas, whose brother and sister-in-law oversee day-to-day operations at the border in Siret.

"The aid is being transported by trusted Ukrainian friends and is going directly to the point of need."

The live music event will send funds directly to the charity so they can buy what is needed in Romania and transport it by lorry to Ukraine.

Martin Radford, the Penarth Lawn Tennis Club chairman, added: "It's great to have the opportunity to support such a worthwhile charity and to do a little bit to help those who are suffering in Ukraine.

"We hope members and the public will get together to support this really important cause."

The four acts performing have given their time for free to help support the charity.

Penarth-based folk singer, Jim Pirrie, and singer-songwriter Bettie J Williams will perform on the night. Also on the bill are The Chartists, from Newport, performing high energy indie music, and Pip & The Cherries will round the night off with some classic rock 'n roll songs and covers.

The event will start at 19:00 with a 23:00 finish and is ticket-only.

Tickets cost £10 (£5 for children) and are available here
