Twenty-three year-old Joseph Simmonds, who lives on Windsor Road, has been charged with the racially aggravated assault of a Tesco Penarth employee.

The incident took place on 18 March. Mr Simmonds pleaded guilty and also admitted to the attempted theft of a bottle of wine from the store and possession of Valium, a class C drug.

It came less than 18-months after Mr Simmonds assaulted a police constable. He was sentenced in August 2020 and failed to comply with the community order sentence he was given.

He will now serve an additional three months in prison and must pay £128 to fund victim services.
