Griffin Books will be hosting an event this week with local Penarth author Sophie Buchaillard to celebrate the launch of her debut novel.

This Is Not Who We Are is based on the story of two women – Iris, a French girl, growing up in Paris, and Victoria, a Rwandan refugee in the camp of Goma, Zaïre, and their friendship that reached across continents and decades.

Paris-born Sophie has lived in Bordeaux, Salamanca, the US and London, before settling in South Wales in 2001. Her short stories and essays have appeared in Wales Arts Review, The Friday Poem, Murmurations Magazine, the Other Side of Hope and Square Wheel Press.

Sophie told Penarth Nub News: "Griffin Books is a great friend to authors in Wales and I am delighted that they agreed to host the launch of my debut novel, This Is Not Who We Are.

"Our partnership is particularly important to me as a Penarth resident since Griffin Books is my local bookshop.

"I look forward to welcoming other local residents on the night, to talk about the novel and share an insight into the two main characters, Iris and Victoria, and how their childhood correspondence during the 1994 genocide in Rwanda impacted both their lives."

The event will take place at Penarth Pier Pavilion on Wednesday, June 15 at 19:30.

Tickets start from £5.00 and can be bought here, through the shop by calling 02920 706455 or by email [email protected]
