A scheme, created on social media, called localanuary is encouraging people to focus on shopping locally this month.

Penarth has the benefit of having access to a wide range of independent shops which can provide all of the things that you buy in your weekly shop.

Approximately, 22,325 of the people living in Penarth are over the age of 16. If each one of these people spent £5 a week in local businesses that could put around £5,875,370 back into the local economy.

Local shopping helps cut carbon emissions, puts money back into the local economy and increases job opportunities locally.

Mark Wilson, Penarth Town councillor, has shown his support for the idea.

On a post on Facebook, he said: ''You are more likely to order something with fewer air miles, greater traceability, and helping the local economy. In Penarth, we are very lucky with two great deli's, a fantastic greengrocer, two butchers and a baker.

''As well as a dedicated shop in trying to stop climate change. We also have many other local businesses. By purchasing locally you are helping your fellow citizen and improving the local economy.

''I know that parking is not the best. But we have good bus services and are lucky to have three railway stations.''

Below we have listed several businesses with ideas of how you could use them to start food shopping locally:

  • Windsor fruit and vegetable shop - Providing organic, locally sourced fruit and veg as well as many other food items. Low in price as well as quality products.
  • Fauvette Cheese Shop - The shop specialises in artisan cheeses from the British Isles as well as Natural Wines. They source goods from producers they have personally met, to pass on a story of craft and provenance to their customers.
  • Foxy's Deli - The deli provides a wide range of meats, cheeses and delicatessen products as well as dry food. Their recent transition to zero waste produce means that you can make a real difference environmentally when shopping here.
  • Jo's Organics - Jo's Organic Stores is a family-run, eco-friendly business, Jo's stocks a good range of organic food, groceries, natural and chemical-free household products and toiletries, organic meats and cheeses, organic wines, and delicious, organic fresh fruit and vegetables.
  • The Bottle Shop - Hundreds of wines, beers and spirits. A lot are brewed or sourced in Wales too! You can also enjoy their products in their seating area.
  • David Lush Butchers - Locally sourced meat products. David Lush began by opening his first shop on Stanwell Rd in 1979 to supply great quality meats for the families and residents of Penarth. With its success, the business was moved to Glebe Street, Penarth in 1988 and was renovated in 1992.
  • Thompsons - Locally sourced meat products.
  • Bruton's Bakery - Brutons strives to achieve a high level of consistency and quality in their products; where possible raw materials and ingredients are sourced from local independent suppliers. Brutons employs around 70 staff mostly from Cardiff and the Vale of Glamorgan, priding itself on low staff turnover; many of whom have worked for the company for over 15 years.
  • Brød Danish Bakery - The Danish Bakery uses traditional Danish methods of handcrafting all of their bread, pastries and cakes each morning in their bakehouse.

Of course, on top of all of the places listed above, Penarth has many local and independent retailers, restaurants and services.

Shop Penarth also operates a rewards scheme for customers who do shop locally. By purchasing a card and shopping in the affiliated shops' customers are rewarded.

Nub News was created on the principle of providing news content for the local community. We appreciate the importance of local business and local people and we want to support Penarth in its growth and sustainability.

That's why we are helping raise awareness of localanuary and hope it will help residents make a small change towards shopping in Penarth.
