Festival of Welsh tennis comes to Penarth on Sunday
The best tennis players in Wales will compete at Penarth's two clubs this week for a major showcase tournament.
The Welsh National Championships will be free for anyone to watch from Sunday, August 21 until Saturday, August 27. Matches start as early as 09:00 and run through to around 21:00 – though schedules vary.
It's the first time any Welsh championships have been held in Penarth since the 1970s.
There will be junior, senior and veteran categories, as well as competitions for visually impaired and wheelchair players.
The Windsor Club will also host the first ever Welsh Padel (CORR) championship at their new Padel court.
Both clubs are welcoming non-members to watch the tournament – and there will be a bar with teas, coffees and light lunches every day at both clubs.
There will be hot food each evening at Penarth LTC – and there will also be a street food stall on Friday evening.
Gavin Seymour, events officer at Penarth LTC, said: "This is a fantastic chance for people to come down to watch some first-class tennis on their doorstep.
"The entry is free and there is usually a really sociable atmosphere at the club – so we are hoping for a really enjoyable week."
Robert Wedlake, tennis director at Windsor LTC, added: "We can't wait for the championships to get underway. We're hoping for some really good tennis – and a showcase for Padel in Wales.
"We want as many people as possible to turn up to create a real tournament atmosphere!"
In addition to toasted sandwiches at lunchtime, Penarth LTC at Rectory Road will be offering different hot meals every evening and street food from Ringo's Dirty Diner on Friday night.
