Penarth Nub News can reveal that the Welsh National Championships will be coming to the town this summer.

Tennis Wales confirmed the tournament will be held at both Penarth Windsor Lawn Tennis Club and Penarth Lawn Tennis Club between August 20-28.

The tournament, which has been running for over 40 years, was initially set to be held in Penarth in 2020 but the COVID-19 pandemic put those plans on hold.

This year, a visually impaired event will be introduced to the tournament for the first time as well as a wheelchair event.

Mark Lewis, 37, competition and events manager at Tennis Wales, told Penarth Nub News: "We chose to host this year's tournament in Penarth because the event was due to come back down to South Wales and it hasn't been held in this part of the country since 2018.

"We were looking for a venue in South Wales and hosting it [the championships] across both tennis clubs, with the high street on your doorstep and easy access to Cardiff, it's just a great fit.

"We also have a great relationship with both clubs anyway which had a big impact on our choice. They both run their own competitions, they have good relationships with their committees and they both have outdoor courts that are in good condition."

The itinerary for this year's championships includes singles and doubles events for Juniors aged eight to 18 years old; mixed doubles for Juniors and Adults; and Senior singles and doubles events for 65 years and over.

Players will have a six-week window to sign up for the tournament via the Tennis Wales website and the organisation predicts nearly 400 people will enter. "We're looking to make this the biggest and best event for a long time," said Mr Lewis.

"Last year, we ran a separate Senior Championships but we're now merging the two. So, the senior groups, from 35 years old up to 65 years and over, will be part of the tournament now."

The padel court at Penarth Windsor Lawn Tennis Club, recently opened by former British number one tennis player, Annabel Croft, will also be a fixture of the tournament's itinerary, as well as touchtennis, a compact version of the sport plated on a 12 metre by six-metre court.

Penarth businesses can also become financial partners of the tournament and Tennis Wales is also welcoming value-in-kind contributions.

Businesses that are interested in partnerships should contact Mark Lewis for more information at [email protected]

Further details on the Welsh National Championships will follow soon.
