Join Stella Grace Lyons at The Turner House for an art history lecture exploring one of the 20th century's most influential artists: Henri Matisse.

Matisse changed the course of the visual arts in the 20th Century yet his subjects were surprisingly conventional: He painted landscapes, figurative works and portraits. It was his treatment of these themes that made him radical. He used intense, eye-popping colors and curving, sensuous lines – an approach that brought him notoriety as one of the 'Fauves', or 'wild beasts'.

This talk will focus on his key paintings, with a particular emphasis on his Fauvist period. Experience the joy, energy and vivid colours of this modern master!

This lecture accompanies Matisse: Drawing with Scissors, a Hayward Gallery Touring exhibition from the Southbank Centre featuring 35 posthumous prints of the famous cut-outs that he produced in the last four years of his life, when confined to his bed. It includes many of his iconic images, such as The Snail and the Blue Nudes.

Stella Grace Lyons is a freelance Art History lecturer, speaker and writer accredited with The Arts Society. Stella runs her own Art History lectures and is a regular lecturer in the UK and Europe for The Arts Society, ACE Cultural Tours, Hebridean Island Cruises, Saga's Art Appreciation Tours, and the National Trust, amongst others. Stella is also a part-time lecturer for the University of South Wales.
