Easter Weekend in Pictures: Penarth Comes Together by Staying Apart

13th Apr 2020 | Local News

This article pictures Penarth during the Easter break in lockdown. The community came together by staying apart and protecting the NHS over the long weekend.

Despite a few issues on the coastline and down by the marina, residents largely stayed at home.

Penarth Nub News, on our one walk of the day, took a stroll through the town to see the difference a year has made.

It was a Saturday evening, following Good Friday, and usually, Penarth would be brimming with people; especially with the weather as wonderful as it was.

Families would be wandering around parks, groups of friends would be packed into pubs and the restaurants and cafes would be brimming with employees taking advantage of their first bank holiday weekend in 2020.

However, the streets were quiet.

It was a Saturday night, falling on a four day weekend, and all we could hear were the birds chirping and the chug of a few lonely cars on the road in the centre of town.

Usually, this would be a very sad sight to behold but given the circumstances, it is welcomed and appreciated.

The buzz emanating from Penarth homes was particularly enjoyable to soak in.

Families in their gardens taking part in group activities or couples lounging in the setting sun on their balconies.

There is definitely some togetherness amid all of the isolation.

A couple of takeaways remained open but there wasn't a peep from the bustling business of the Railway Pub, a firm favourite for local residents.

The pub, parks and shops of Penarth remain still, shut and ready to reopen when the time is right.

Other than a couple of other walkers, we saw no one else on our daily outing.

The stillness is the weirdest part of it all. It's almost like everyone is taking a big deep breath at the same time.

Maybe, if we are to take anything from this time, we will learn to slow down a little and appreciate the smaller things going on around us.

One thing is for certain though. We look forward to a cold, local pint in the pub when this is all over.
