TWO residents at a Penarth care home have recently celebrated momentous birthdays.

First up to cut the cake was Doreen Evans whose 101st birthday featured a party attended by Penarth Mayor Cllr Laura Rochefort.

June Mansell, community coordinator for Morel Court on Raisedale Road said: "Doreen became a teacher when she left school and travelled for a while before settling down to become a wife and mother, had three children, five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren."

Members of her family were with her for the birthday celebrations and June added: "She has been living at MHA Morel Court for more than 10 years and is a very popular member of the home.

"She enjoyed the company of the mayor and was in a good mood.

"She was very happy to see her family and really enjoyed her day, for her the secret to a long life is to have a big family and one that is close by."

Next up for a celebration was former Magistrate George Watkeys who marked his 100th birthday with a tea party at Morel Court, also in the company of his family.

Second World War veteran George, who has lived at Morel Court for six years,  was stationed for five years in India as a wireless operator for the RAF. After the war he married Sheilah and had three children, one who died aged five. Sheilah passed away in May 2020.
