A restaurant in Penarth town centre has received a Michelin star as published in the new Michelin guide.

Home, located on Stanwell Road and owned by James Sommerin, has been awarded the recognition after being open for just over a year.

The guide said: "James Sommerin was one of the heroes of the pandemic, as he threw himself into providing meals for NHS staff. Now it's all about re-establishing himself on the culinary scene because, in 2021, he opened his own restaurant.

"It's a small, intimate space providing an immersive yet warm and friendly experience. As the name implies, it's staffed almost exclusively by family members, with James and his daughter Georgia working together in the open kitchen.

"It's a surprise menu – if you can resist opening the envelope on your table – and the impeccable dishes make great use of the produce provided by local suppliers. Wales should be as proud of this restaurant as any Josh Adams try."

Mr Sommerin, 43, told Nub News: "I was absolutely over the moon when I first heard the news. It's an achievement that we've done before, but it's more poignant this time around.

"Home is a very small, intimate restaurant and the focus is very much on the experience, the quality of the ingredients and the attention to detail.

"We work so closely as a family unit and with every table that comes through the door."

Mr Sommerin used to own Esplanade Restaurant, another Michelin star eatery, but was forced to close its doors during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.
