A new app specifically designed for takeaways and customers in the Vale of Glamorgan is set to become big competition for established names like Uber Eats and Deliveroo.
Vale of Glamorgan Eats aims to target smaller takeaways and customers that don't live near big towns by charging a smaller commission rate and catering to more rural areas.
More than 25 takeaways have already signed up to the app, which is due to launch within the first week of March.
Ethan Rane, 38, promoter and partner of Vale of Glamorgan Eats, told Nub News how the app has pledged to donate almost 50% of its first-year profits to local causes. "What we're doing that no one else is doing is giving back almost 50% of this year's profits to local charities," said Ethan. "To my knowledge, no one else if doing the same."
In terms of commission, Just Eat charges a rate of 14% with a service charge on top. Although higher, it's not clear exactly how much commission other big food apps such as Uber Eats and Deliveroo charge.
But Vale of Glamorgan Eats will charge a fee of 7.5%. "Everyone who orders on apps like JustEat, Uber Eats and Deliveroo, they charge higher commissions, and we charge almost half of what they do," said Ethan.
Currently, the app will only operate as an ordering service, which means the company will outsource delivery drivers from separate companies to deliver the orders. But Ethan thinks this will change soon. "As we grow, we're going to need more people and we would love to just hire people from the Vale of Glamorgan."
Ethan hopes the business model will become a template for other food app businesses to follow. "People ask me, 'how can you charge so much less and still operate?' But the answer is they are [other food apps] are charging so much commission that there is room to do this.
"In the 7.5%, we have a model where we can definitely make some profit to survive, but we don't need to make a super normal profit. You still have money left to give back to local charities and local schools."
Vale of Glamorgan Eats will launch in the first week of March.
