Tributes from staff and friends have been paid to a Llandough hospital nurse and Penarth resident who has died after contracting the coronavirus.

Dominga David joined the health board in 2004 after moving from the Philippines.

The health board said she passed away on Tuesday after testing positive for COVID-19.

In a statement, Cardiff and Vale University Health Board said: ''[Dominga] has been an integral part of ward life of West 5 in the University Hospital of Llandough since 2004 and will be remembered as an exceptionally hard worker and a respectful, kind and compassionate person when interacting with patients, families and colleagues alike.

"She was part of the ward family and was well-loved by everyone. She is survived by her son Renzie, to whom we send our deepest condolences.

"We will miss her greatly.''

The death of Allan Macalalad, a staff member at the Royal Glamorgan Hospital, was also announced today having passed away after testing positive for COVID-19.

Executive Nurse Director, Ruth Walker, has extended her condolences to both their families and teams, saying "It is absolutely heartbreaking to have lost two colleagues in the same week to COVID-19.

''Both Allan and Dominga were valued members of our team here in Cardiff and Vale UHB and we will miss them profoundly and we send our condolences to their respective families.

"I would like to thank those staff members who worked with Allan and Dominga, for the support they have given to their families during this difficult time.

''I know everyone who worked with them will be feeling sad today and how much we will miss these caring, compassionate and kind individuals.

"Our thoughts are with Allan and Dominga's teams in UHB, and their loved ones both here in the UK and the Philippines."
