An Alan Bennett Story of Music, Memory and Hope.
In a Yorkshire mill town overshadowed by conflict and loss, silence hangs heavy. The men who once filled the pews and choir stalls have gone, leaving behind families, grief, and an echo of what once was.
When the demanding and enigmatic Dr Henry Guthrie (Ralph Fiennes) arrives to take charge of the struggling Ramsden Choral Society, he finds little more than a handful of women and boys still willing to sing. Determined to rebuild the choir and restore a sense of purpose to the town, Guthrie sets his sights on a daunting goal — performing Elgar's The Dream of Gerontius.
His methods are strict, his temperament fiery, and his past is the subject of quiet gossip. Yet as rehearsals unfold, something extraordinary happens: the choir's fractured voices begin to find harmony, and through the act of singing, the community starts to heal. Music becomes both confession and salvation — a shared heartbeat in a town learning to breathe again.
As friendships deepen and tensions simmer, The Choral reveals how the smallest notes of courage can swell into something transcendent. It's a story about art as refuge, and the power of ordinary people to lift one another through beauty and belief.
Featuring unforgettable performances from Ralph Fiennes, Maxine Peake, and Stephen Graham, The Choral is a moving, beautifully observed portrait of resilience, belonging, and the quiet triumph of the human spirit.
From Nicholas Hytner, acclaimed director of The History Boys and The Lady in the Van, and Alan Bennett, one of Britain's most beloved storytellers.
"A majestic hymn to the power of community and song." – The Guardian
