A group of firefighters and ambulance crew who work for South Wales Fire and Rescue Service and the Welsh Ambulance Service's NHS Trust are climbing Ben Nevis, Scafell Pike and Snowdon in 24 hours to raise money for charity.

Two teams of six climbers and two drivers will complete the National Three Peaks challenge on 17 June in aid of three charities: the Firefighters Charity, Tasc Ambulance Charity and Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan.

Mark Potter, a firefighter based at Barry Fire and Rescue Station told Nub News the challenge had been organised to with Coronavirus restrictions in mind.

"It's an extra bit of managing we had to do, and we'll be socially distanced and wearing masks throughout," he said.

Mark has also volunteered with the ambulance service, and has seen the impact of mental health issues.

"I've had an inside look at what they deal with, and especially with Coronavirus, the impact of mental health is being felt a lot harder.

"Within the services we've had colleagues and friends affected by mental health issues from the job and outside.

"We're acutely aware of how it affects people.

"We're hoping to do some car washing, a treadmill run in some local supermarkets in the coming months to raise more money.

"We've just got to make sure the right procedures are in place because of the restrictions," he said.

The chosen charities work tirelessly to provide vital treatment, support and care for their respective services, for the Firefighters and Ambulance Crew whom sustain work-related physical injuries and mental health issues whilst they are working on the frontline, helping to keep them in work and supporting these workforce communities.

Mind in the Vale of Glamorgan provides a vital service, to people experiencing mental health issues, caring and supporting them with treatment and guidance enabling them to recover and achieve their goals and ambitions in life.

"For us, it's all about raising awareness of these charities and how they help," said Mark.

"If somebody that's out there that needs help, hopefully they see these charities and know they have someone to turn to."
