The leader of the Vale of Glamorgan Council has addressed the incidents leading up to the death of George Floyd and the council's stance on the situation as well as their actions moving forward.

Cllr Neil Moore said: "As an Authority, we have long made clear our absolute and unequivocal opposition to racism and discrimination of any kind.

"Our work to tackle such abhorrent prejudice dates back many years and includes a longstanding relationship with Show Racism the Red Card. Today, we remain committed to equality for all regardless of race, age, gender, religion or sexual orientation.

"Like many millions around the world, I was shocked and deeply moved by pictures of how George Floyd was treated before his tragic death.

"Black Lives Matter and in support of that campaign, the iconic shelter at Barry Island will be lit up in purple light over the weekend.

"We will also be investing to ensure similar lighting effects can be projected onto the Council's corporate buildings in future, which cannot be achieved at the moment.

"This investment will allow the Council to make clear statements of support to our community about various causes and campaigns.

"I fully understand the strong desire people have to protest on this emotive and powerful issue. This is a right that we should be proud of – free speech is important.

"However, as we remain in the midst of a global pandemic, I would urge everyone to stay safe.

"That obviously involves observing social distancing, maintaining hand hygiene and not travelling more than five miles to meet with members of another household."
