A 37-year-old man was arrested in Dinas Powys in the early hours of this morning on suspicion of making threats to kill, according to South Wales Police.

A heavy police presence - comprising dogs, helicopters, negotiators and a firearms team - was able to bring about the man's arrest after a long day of disturbance yesterday.

The police were called to Carwent Close at 2:15 PM where a standoff ensued. The initial call regarded a "concern for welfare".

The man could be heard making violent threats from a window at police officers and occasionally brandishing what appeared to be a table knife. He seem to be heavily inebriated, guzzling beer as he berated the officers and a crowd of locals.

The South Wales Police released the following statement:

"A 37-year-old man was arrested in early hours of this morning (23 Aug) on suspicion of making threats to kill.

"He remains in custody at Cardiff Bay police station.

"The community of #DinasPowys are thanked for their patience whilst the incident was ongoing."

Neighbours, who gathered at the scene, told Nub News that the man had been behaving strangely since Friday afternoon, prowling the streets "off his head."

The recipient of the death threats is currently unknown.
