The Vale of Glamorgan Council is removing the semi-permanent parking-prevention bollards from the town centre.

Found on Windsor Road and Glebe Street, the bollards were designed to aid the two metre rule, providing additional space for pedestrians to pass one another.

Cllr Peter King, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Neighbourhood Services and Transport, said they are being removed as part of the steady easing of COVID restrictions.

"The safety measures introduced to town centres are under constant review and subject to change as we learn more," he said.

""Our approach is influenced by the latest medical advice and the ongoing dialogue taking place with town centre businesses.

"We will continue to streamline our response to the virus as part of this learning process."

But Cllr King implored residents to remain vigilant, as COVID-19 is not yet behind us. The one-way system - which has been criticised for its ineffectiveness and lack of enforcement - will remain in effect.

"I want to make it absolutely clear that coronavirus remains a major threat and it is important residents continue to follow safety guidance."

The decision has been greeted warmly by the Penarth Business Group, who spearheaded the drive to remove the bollards. Angelina Hall, Chair of the group, told Nub News:

"We were the boots on the ground trying to work this. It looked like a bit of a warzone at Glebe Street - there were traffic cones everywhere and it didn't look inviting. So Penarth Business Group worked very hard with the Vale of Glamorgan to have the views of the traders reflected.

"I'm really happy that Penarth Business Group was able to make a difference."

The Council has also made £500,000 available for upgrading work to all five town centres in the Vale and a firm of urban designers have been commissioned to recommend ways in which these locations can be improved.
