UP CLOSE: Meet "Just Around The Corner", Penarth's first handywomen

"We're not looking to become hugely rich or successful, we just want to feel needed in the community we're in," Rebecca Powell tells Nub News as we sit in Alexandra Park over a Stol Coffee.

She and her fiancé, Amy Faulkner, are the jack of all trades duo ready to offer Penarth a helping hand as we begin to clamber out of lockdown.

Cat-sitters, housekeepers, child carers, shopping assistants and tech team combined, they are hoping to make your life easier and bring Penarth closer together in the process.

Perhaps even more so than most, the couple have had a rather topsy-turvy pandemic.

"Well, we got engaged (officially!) in February, just after moving to Penarth from Birmingham, where we met while working various bar jobs.

"Moving to a small community like Penarth was a big decision after Birmingham life but as central Birmingham becomes more corporate we wanted to begin our dream of a community wellbeing service in a place like Penarth. But then lockdown happened.

"Our business relies a lot on word-of-mouth, so it proved almost impossible to get off the ground while everyone was retreating into their little bubbles. So, we've spent lockdown devising a little business plan that is driven by the principles we share."

And what are those principles?

"We're both very people-driven, caring, conscientious, environmentally-conscious, and massively anti-corporate. We're also really versatile with loads of varied experiences between us, so this business really reflects all that."

In an age of chain stores and isolation, theirs is a novel idea for a business. I probe for how they conceived it.

"Well, we had a handyman round to our flat and we thought he was really cool," Amy replies. "We just thought to ourselves, "okay, we're not handymen - we don't do DIY or stuff like that - but what about handywomen. So, we can come and do all the things we're good at - childcare, pet sitting, technological support, errands, housework, even massages and holistic therapy - for people who might be struggling."

"Childcare is one of our strongest services," Rebecca chimes in. "I'm very experienced with playwork and theatre arts and storytelling, so when we take care of your kids it's none of this flicking the TV on; we do creative tasks to help them develop.

"But it's also about getting out there and forming relationships with families. We're not just looking do a certain job for people. We want to build lasting relationships and try to bring this amazing community even closer together."

'Just Around The Corner', though, is of course still a business. For all the couple's talk of anti-corporatism, they have bills to pay like the rest of us. I ask how much they charge for their services.

"We operate on a sliding scale, pay-what-you-can basis. We first-and foremost want to help people but obviously need to get paid in the process. So, it's all about finding that balance.

"We're basically trying to market ourselves as people in the community who just want to help out. It's less about what we're doing - more about finding ways to help people. And if we can't help you ourselves, then we're happy to find someone who will. We're just looking to make Penarth an even better place."
