Snowcat Cinema at Penarth Pier Pavilion will screen a new Ukrainian independent film to raise money for the country's devastating crisis.

Olga, a Ukrainian/Swiss production about a 15-year-old female gymnast exiled in Switzerland while civil unrest is happening in Kyiv, will screen at the cinema on Tuesday, April 5.

It was due for a national release later this year, but the film's distributor, 606 Distribution, decided to bring the release forward to raise funds for the Ukraine crisis.

Other cinemas around the UK will also screen the film and all proceeds will be donated to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Ben Rive, 44, manager of Snowcat Cinema at Penarth Pier Pavilion, told Nub News: "I've done fundraising screenings before and I wanted to do something for the situation in Ukraine, but it can sometimes be a bit difficult to find a suitable film.

"Luckily, the distributors have driven this where the film Olga was due to be released later in the year. Because it's a Ukrainian and Swiss production, they jumped on the idea of releasing the film earlier and at a more useful time to raise funds for Ukraine.

"Rather than try to programme something and not get the tone of it right or pick the wrong film, to go with something that is being widely released across the UK where a lot of cinemas will be screening it as a fundraising exercise, it just felt good to get on board with that."

Proceeds will be sent to 606 Distribution who then donate the money to the DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal. "Hopefully we can get close to a full house as possible which means we'll be handing over a few hundred quid to the charity," said Ben.

"But because it's a brand-new film and it's an independent film, it has no pre-promotion and none of the film reviewers are talking about it.

"It's a bit of a leap of faith for the audience really. I've just got to get people to take a chance and every penny of their ticket money is going to charity.

"While the eyes of the world are on Ukraine, it's interesting to go and see a piece of Ukrainian culture."

The screening of Olga will start at 19:00, with doors opening at 18:30.

Tickets should be bought here via the Snowcat Cinema website.
