Penarth councillors have paid tribute to the town's former mayor Ken Lloyd after his passing on Friday, July 29.

It is not known how Cllr Lloyd died. He was elected mayor in May 2017 and was previously the deputy mayor in 2011/12.

During his tenure, Cllr Lloyd raised funds for Cancer Research UK and the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB).

Today (August 1), Welsh Conservative Leader, Andrew RT Davies said, "Ken was a community-minded individual who cared passionately for Penarth. He was committed to public service and as mayor, he served as a strong ambassador for the town.

"I recall fondly supporting the charity events he organised for Cancer Research UK and the RNIB, which were two causes close to his heart.

"Ken was well-liked and respected by all who knew him. My thoughts go out to his wife Georgia at this sad time."

Cllr George Carroll, leader of the Conservatives at the Vale of Glamorgan Council, said: "Ken was a real gentleman and a huge pillar of the community.

"He served Penarth with distinction during his time as mayor and was a hardworking member of Penarth Town Council.

"Ken represented the Cornerswell ward, which borders my own ward of Llandough, and it was always a pleasure to work with him.

"My thoughts and prayers are with Ken's wife Georgia and his whole family. He will be deeply missed by us all."

Leighton Rowlands, former Mayor of the Vale of Glamorgan and chairman of the Vale Conservatives, added: "I'm deeply saddened to hear this news. Ken was a gentle guy and a well-loved and respected councillor."
