The Vale of Glamorgan Council and Legacy Leisure are on the lookout for 10 international sports performers to join their Sports Academy scheme.

The Vale council will be looking for sporting stars from Penarth and across the Vale to apply for the scheme.

Previous beneficiaries include Brett Morse from Penarth, who holds the Welsh discuss record and was once ranked eighth in the world.

Delivered in partnership between the Local Authority and the organisation that manages leisure centres in the County, this offers individuals with elite sporting promise the opportunity to use appropriate facilities free of charge.

That may include gyms, squash and badminton courts, swimming pools, the Jenner Park Stadium track and more, while there is also an opportunity to attend fitness classes.

Cllr Kathryn McCaffer, Vale of Glamorgan Council Cabinet Member for Leisure, Arts and Culture, said: "We have some hugely talented rising sports stars in the Vale and would like to give them every opportunity of fulfilling their potential.

"To that end, 10 promising individuals have the opportunity to join our Sports Academy scheme, offering free use of Vale sports facilities. Hopefully this can facilitate their progression to the next level."

Applicants must be Vale of Glamorgan residents, participate in a sport that is recognised by Sport Wales and be affiliated to the appropriately recognised national governing body.

They also need to have reached Welsh or other national squad status, represented their country in the previous year and be in contention to receive further international honours in the following 12 months.

If you feel that you meet the criteria and would benefit from being a member of the Sports Academy, please contact Karen Davies by emailing [email protected] or calling 01446 704793 for further information and an application form.

The deadline for applications is 05 December and the final decision on selection will be made by the Sports Academy panel.
