Sully Village Group commemorate lockdown with stone display at Jubilee Hall playground
The stones, painted by residents, have been turned into an art display for everyone to enjoy
Stones painted by Sully residents during lockdown have been turned into a display at Jubilee Hall playground.
The project began with people painting rocks to leave outside their homes or on the beach for others to find. Sully Village Group decided to transform the stones into a permanent installation for residents.
Sully Village Group chairperson Hannah Bevmoh was grateful to everyone who had helped with the project, including Penarth Construction who installed the stones free of charge, Karyn Thompson, Nigel Thompson and KGJ Price (Railway Contractors) Ltd, who donated building materials and Jack Jones, gardener at Jubilee Hall who gave his time and materials.
Several residents also made generous monetary donations, and Swanbridge Maintenance collected the earth and put in rubber safety lining at the fence for free.
"We wanted to do something that would cheer people up. So, when we suggested the idea, everyone began painting even more stones," said Hannah.
"Some are very special because they're remembering people we have lost during this time. Then there are ones that are thanking the NHS, and some are just decorated how people wanted to.
"Everyone who uses this park can see something they've made here, and children can look at it as they walk to school in the mornings," she said.
There are around 150 stones in the display, some with rainbows, flowers, and boats.
Stones painted by 85-year-old Sully resident Margaret Robinson depict a spitfire plane and Captain Tom, who raised money for NHS Charities Together by walking laps of his garden.
The stones have been set with a protective resin, next to the community garden Sully Village Group organised with donations from Keep Wales Tidy.
The Jubilee playgroup and Brownie group use the garden to learn about wildlife and the environment, planting seasonal flowers and maintaining the garden, alongside residents.
The Sully Village Group will use the money donated to install solar lights in the playground to make the stones and garden more visible in winter, and to plant a rooted Christmas tree.
