St David’s Day celebrations for end of life charity fundraiser
Staff and volunteers at a Penarth hospice brought sunshine on St David's Day as they donned yellow and created crafts to celebrate their own fundraising Daffodil Day.
The teams at the Marie Curie Hospice, Cardiff and the Vale, took part in the activity as part of the end of life charity's biggest annual fundraiser, The Great Daffodil Appeal.
The appeal, which continues to run throughout March, sees volunteers across the country don the giant yellow top hat in supermarkets, train stations and high streets while handing out the charity's iconic daffodil pins in return for donations.
The appeal has now been running for 37 years, and public collections returned in 2022 following a two-year suspension during the pandemic so it is more important than ever that people support the charity's work.
In Wales, people can also support the campaign by holding their very own Daffodil Day – Your Day, Your Way – throughout March. You can hold a bake sale, hold a workplace quiz or come up with a unique fundraiser yourself.
On March 1, nurses, healthcare assistants, community teams and volunteers donned something yellow for the day, while a craft event was held in the Wellbeing and Support Hub (WaSH) at the hospice, with daffodil crafts created throughout the afternoon and placed on display on the windows.
Patients also got to sample a delicious St David's Day menu put together by Hotel Services Supervisor Stephen Jones and his team, among which was included leek and potato soup and warm bara brith pudding with penderyn whisky custard.
Meanwhile, community fundraisers and volunteers were out in force at public collections in Cardiff city centre, with some joining the annual St David's Day parade.
Marie Curie is dependent on public donations and last year the money raised helped the charity provide direct care to more than 46,000 people across the UK via its nine in Penarth and through nursing care in people's own homes. Donations also support its Information and Support line, which provides a listening ear to anyone dealing with any aspect of death, dying and bereavement.
"Collecting or holding a daffodil day couldn't be simpler and our amazing team will support you from the moment you sign-up to volunteer, making sure you have everything you need to encourage the public to donate and wear one of our iconic daffodil pins.
"All the money raised will help Marie Curie continue to provide vital end of life care for terminally ill people and their families during their final days, weeks and months.
"It's great to see our staff and volunteers join in the campaign and celebrate our national day with their own Daffodil Day.
"It was also a delight to once again be part of the St David's Day parade in Cardiff, and thanks to all the generous people who donated to our collectors on the day."
During the Great Daffodil Appeal on March 23, the annual National Day of Reflection will take place. This is a unique day to remember loved ones who've died and to support people who are grieving. Marie Curie will be leading a minute's silence at noon on the day.
