The leader of Plaid Cymru on Vale of Glamorgan Council, Chris Franks has highlighted his party's concerns about a rising debt mountain facing local schools.

He says: "We are concerned about how difficult school finances have become. Schools report that they are in debt to the tune of £171,000.

"Unfortunately the situation shows no sign of improvement. There are 22 schools in financial difficulty with 19 saying that there is no chance of getting back into credit within three to five years.

"Plaid is alarmed that school budgets area in such a situation and calls on the government to give priority our children's education."

A statement from Vale of Glamorgan council says: "The position in schools remains challenging. We are anticipating changes in grants from the Welsh Government, however we have not yet had formal announcements yet.

"It is likely we will see significant reductions in maintenance grant funding for example, and are planning accordingly.

"We are expecting more information in December/January."
