UPDATE (16:59): Readers have got in touch to say that a number of people at the beach on Monday were showing their respects to a friend and family member who had passed away as they were unable to attend the funeral due to current lockdown restrictions.

They have made it clear that they were following all of the social distance guidelines whilst doing this and addressed concerns of the nearby residents.

Residents residing near the Esplanade are concerned over the number of cars that have been visiting the area in recent days as well as the generally busy nature of the seaside area.

One Penarth resident got in touch after they had noticed all the car parking slots were in use on Monday.

They said: ''As days go by, more and more people are ignoring the "lockdown'' in Penarth.

''There is no better example of this than the number of cars parked every day on the Esplanade.

''I have photos, taken at 3 pm Monday, showing that there was not one available parking space on the seafront.

''It is my view that the Esplanade should be closed to all traffic other than residents and delivery vehicles.

''This will stop people driving down and having picnics etc.

''The beach would still be accessible to people exercising, but with nowhere to park others would be discouraged from ignoring the very clear Government guidelines.''

Other members of the public have also expressed their concerns on social media, similarly citing a number of cars in the area.

Another resident commented on the situation last week and said: ''Loads of cars in Penarth this afternoon, particularly on the Esplanade.''

Many more have commented on the crowded coastal area stating that benches are full, people are eating takeaways and social distancing becoming increasingly difficult.

In Wales, the government's advice is that people should not use exercise as "an excuse" to do something else, like having picnics or sitting on benches for "a prolonged period."
