Local residents have been voicing their concerns after a spike in car-related burglaries in the Penarth area.

Comments were circulating on social media after a number of incidents were reported during the month of February.

Penarth Nub News approached South Wales Police for a comment.

A spokesperson said: ''Officers are reminding residents to be vigilant following a recent increase in car crime in Penarth.

''Since February 1, five cars have been stolen in the town.

''There is no evidence to suggest certain models are being targeted.

''To minimise the risk of falling victim to thieves and vandals, all motorists are urged to ensure their vehicles are securely locked and that anything valuable inside the vehicle is removed.

''Residents are also urged to report suspicious behaviour to police.''

A Nub News reader got in contact after their car was broken into on St Augustines road on the 1st of February.

They said: ''We were eating with friends and came out at around 11 pm to find the car window had been smashed in.

''We were shocked because there was nothing on show and therefore nothing was actually stolen from the vehicle.

''It's quite upsetting to know that someone has gone through your possessions and it was clear that they had been rooting through.''

''It is really not what you would expect in Penarth. We contacted the police to record it.''

South Wales Police also provided us with some crime prevention tips. These include:

• Park vehicles in a garage or on a driveway

• Park in areas that are well lit and avoid areas which are in cover of darkness or obscured from any public view

• Don't leave evidence of valuables i.e. windscreens marks caused by sat navs

• Speak to your car dealer about increased security measures for keyless entry systems
