A Cowbridge resident has created a petition to improve road safety at the A48/Darren Farm roundabout, after a motorcyclist died there last night.

Tim Matthews, who lives nearby and regularly drives on the roundabout, described it as "confusing" and said the signage is "inadequate".

He has called on the Vale of Glamorgan Council to change the road layout and reduce the speed limit.

"I go over that roundabout several times a day," said Tim.

"It always seemed to me quite confusing at the very least.

"One of the major issues with it is that you've got the slip road coming up from Cowbridge town, as it were, joining into the two lanes.

"People are trying to go across from the slip road to the inside lane, if you like, if they've got to go straight ahead.

"I'm no expert in highways construction, but questions have been raised about whether it complies with the rules."

At this time, South Wales Police has not disclosed the cause of the single vehicle collision in which 41-year-old Matthew Rouch from Penarth was killed.

He is not the first motorcyclist to have died at this roundabout: in August last year a 72-year-old man was killed after crashing into it.

"Of course, one doesn't know if these incidents were a result of the roundabout, but it just seems odd that there have been several accidents there and two fatalities.

"Surely something is not quite right?

Tim has also written to Jane Hutt, MS for the Vale of Glamorgan, to gain her support.

"There were a couple of people suggesting we start a petition," said Tim.

"Whether it will do anything or not, who knows but doing nothing definitely achieves nothing."

A Vale of Glamorgan Council spokesperson said: "The Council is aware of this tragic incident and would like to pass on its sincere condolences to the family of the individual involved.

"Initial investigations suggest that the highway layout was not a contributing factor, however, the Council, in conjunction with the Police, will carry out a full review to determine if any measures to improve road safety can be implemented at this location."

Jane Hutt, Vale of Glamorgan MS said: "I am very saddened to hear of the tragic incident at the new Cowbridge roundabout.

"Road safety is incredibly important in our communities and I have already taken up the issue of speed limits in this area and will be following this up again with South Wales Police and the Vale of Glamorgan Council."
