A mural on a property in Penarth displaying the words ''Cofiwch Dryweryn'' has blown up on social media after a local family painted the design on the back of their house, making it the first mural of its kind in our seaside town.
The Cofiwch Dryweryn mural in West Wales has been around since the 1960s is an important memorial to a tragic part of the modern history of Wales.
It refers to the compulsory eviction of the village of Capel Celyn so the valley could be flooded by the new Tryweryn Reservoir, built to provide water to Liverpool.
It is recognised as an important cultural monument in Wales by the Welsh Assembly and has been an image shared across the country by residents and communities.
We spoke to David Wilton, who created the artwork, about their piece in Penarth and the inspiration behind it. He said: ''My son Bryn (11) and I are supporters of Barry Town FC so we're stopped many times to admire and discuss the original mural when travelling to away games.
''The attempts over the last few years by vandals at destroying the mural have upset us as a family and we were delighted that hundreds of tribute murals were painted across Wales last year to keep the spirit alive.
''Recently we watched the excellent S4C programme by Radio 1 DJ Huw Stephens (the son of the original creator) on the memorials and we felt the time was right to do our own.
''The Covid-19 pandemic has once again shown that Westminster are free to impose what they want on our communities in Wales whilst ignoring the same rules with no consequences.
''Our neighbours in Pembroke Terrace have been really supportive.
''In fact, there were 3 other neighbour families who were keen to get involved but current lockdown didn't make it possible.
''I posted the image on social media and in first 12 hours, it received over received 1,000 likes, positive comments and shares including comments from Welsh people across the world such as USA, Dubai and Australia.
''I have also received contact from a number of Penarth locals asking for exact location so they can come and see it.''
This first Penarth location is being added to mapping project which can be found here.
There are 9 recorded in Cardiff and there is one other in Vale of Glamorgan (St Hilary).
The mural is painted on the families boundary wall in Pembroke terrace and was done by parents Sian & David and their son Bryn Wilton, 11. It took around two hours to complete.
A map of all of the murals documented so far is available here. It was created and is regularly updated, by historian David Howell.
