Members of Penarth Yacht Club will be raising money for Ukraine by rowing as far as they can within one hour at an event on March 16.

People can guess how far the group will reach by filling in a sponsorship form at the club and all proceeds will go directly to the Red Cross DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Brian Brayford, 74, who lives in Penarth and is a member of the Penarth Yacht Club, told Nub News: "One of our members is Ukrainian and her daughter and mother are still in Ukraine.

"Her daughter is a nurse and currently driving an ambulance in the capital city. She refuses to leave the city for humanitarian reasons and wants to stay and help. Obviously, her mother and stepfather here in Penarth are extremely worried about her."

The group of Penarth Yacht Club members meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings for rowing sessions to keep fit. "We call ourselves the early morning rowers," said Bryan.

"The mother and stepfather of the woman driving the ambulance are in this group, so we thought it would be a good idea to raise some money for the Ukraine relief."

Eight rowing machines will be set up from 08:00 – 09:00 and members will row as far as they can within the one-hour time slot. The person that guesses the closest distance will win £25 and a bottle of champagne.

It will cost £1 for a guess and six guesses for £5. "We're just trying to raise as much money as we can and get it out there as quickly as we can," said Bryan.

The winner will be announced at an Irish-themed charity evening on March 19 at Penarth Yacht Club. A musician will provide entertainment, as well as an auction and a raffle.

All money raised will also be donated to the Red Cross DEC Ukraine Humanitarian Appeal.

Entry is free and the event will start at 19:30.

Sponsorship forms are available to pick up at Penarth Yacht Club, where you can fill out your name, contact information and guess how far the team of rowers will reach.
