Penarth Vale Foodbank Donations Required as Centre Closures Announced

Local News by The Editor 27th Mar 2020

The Vale Foodbank is still running as an essential service during the coronavirus outbreak to help those who need it most and Nub News are asking Penarth residents to consider donating items whilst they are out doing their own essential shopping trips.

The donation point nearest to local residents is Tesco on Terranova Way. The service is available during the opening hours which are currently 7 am - 10 pm. Texaco and Nisa in Dinas Powys also collect donations from 08.00 – 21.00 at the storefront.

The shopping list below shows the items that are most needed at the moment in the local area:

• URGENTLY NEEDED FOOD ITEMS

• TINNED MEAT

• TINNED POTATOES

• TINNED PEAS, CARROTS, SWEETCORN

• SUGAR

• TOILET ROLLS

• RICE PUDDING

• COFFEE

• UHT FRUIT JUICE AND SQUASH

• SHAMPOO AND SHOWER GEL

• TINNED FRUIT

• PEANUT BUTTER

• JAM

They said: ''Over 90% of the food distributed by foodbanks in The Trussell Trust network is donated by the public – that's why food donations are absolutely vital to our ability to give everyone referred to us a balanced and nutritious three day supply of food.''

The Vale Foodbank opened in September 2011, with one Foodbank Centre in Barry. Since then they have expanded throughout the Vale of Glamorgan and there are now six centres available to distribute emergency food parcels into the community.

Vale Foodbank is a project founded by local churches, working together towards stopping hunger in the local area. The Foodbank relies on donations of food from individuals, churches, schools and other organisations.

For those in need of food supply from a Foodbank things have changed slightly today due to the coronavirus outbreak.

In a statement on Facebook today, they said: ''From next week all our centres will be temporarily closed & we'll be running a delivery service.

''If you're in a financial crisis you'll still need to get help from an agency and ask them for a foodbank voucher. Tell them if you've got any allergies, prefer tea or coffee & have any pets. They'll make an electronic referral to us and we'll deliver your food parcel. Here's how it will work:

- Referred Monday or Tuesday: parcel delivered Wednesday

- Referred Wednesday or Thursday: parcel delivered Friday

- Referred Friday: parcel delivered Monday

''Parcels will be delivered from 11 am - 4 pm. You must make sure you're in as we can't come back a second time.

''The driver will put the food on the doorstep, knock, walk 2 metres away and wait for you to answer the door and pick up the food. If there's no answer we'll take the food away.

''Thanks to everyone who's offered to drive for us - we now have a team in place and will post on Facebook if we need more help. Thanks, everyone for your support.''

You can find out more from the Vale Foodbank Website including monetary donations and how to access support.
