Penarth Town Goes One Way as Retail Returns to a New Normal

The Vale of Glamorgan Council has implemented a one-way pedestrian system in Penarth which starts today, as non-essential retail opens across the town.

We ventured into the town centre to check out the new system, which is pictured above, as well as capturing some of the shop openings as the rules lifted.

The system is marked by signage on lamp posts throughout the streets. Each side of Windsor Road has been designated a one-way directional system (Sainsbury's to Barclays and Lloyd's Bank to Wasons).

Glebe Street and Stanwell Road have also got similar routes in place as well the one-way system in Windsor Arcade.

Socially distanced queues had already started to form this morning and the popular Windsor Fruit and Veg store had a line of eager customers (the store will now be open for face-to-face custom on Monday's and Saturday's).

Cones blocking car parking had also been put in place, although it seems that in most cases they have been ignored (or moved). They have been allocated to allow space for shoppers to socially distance and to encourage active travel.

Disabled parking is still available across the town.

Cllr Lis Burnett commented on the strategy on Twitter. She said: ''Initial plans for town centres being implemented for Monday opening. Minimum intervention at present which will be reviewed/ change as more shops open and we see how things work in practice.''

The Vale Council said: ''Over the coming days we'll be doing some things to make our town centres safe places to shop and visit.

"Please be patient look out for each other when visiting out high streets and resorts.

"Together we can keep our communities safe and our businesses open."
