Penarth strongman pulls 18-tonne truck two miles for charity

A personal trainer and challenge enthusiast has completed an extreme challenge dubbed 'The World's Toughest 2 Miles' to raise money for the Royal Brompton & Harefield Hospital Charity.

Max Glover, originally from Penarth, pulled an almost 18-tonne truck across two miles at Elvington Airfield in York on Wednesday 25 August.

The challenge is to help raise £2,000 for the Harefield Hospital; a charity close to Max's heart following the care they gave to his friend when she needed a double lung transplant.

"It was very tough for Jules before the transplant as she suffered with a genetic lung disease. But she never gave up. Since her operation I have vowed to do what I can to raise money for this hospital charity, she has been my inspiration," said Max.

The 34-year-old former Royal Marines Commando trained for two months to prepare himself for this event, a challenge that is usually reserved for Strong Man competitions where participants attempt to pull a heavy vehicle for 100ft.

There were some surprises on the day too; Max had initially planned to pull a ten-tonne vehicle and was informed it was almost double that just before starting.

"I started training for this two months ago, but thought it wasn't going to ahead and only got the green light for this on the Friday before. I wasn't as prepared physically as I wanted to be, but sometimes you've just got to play the hand you're dealt," he said.

"The pull went well, the track seemed never ending but eventually I got to the end. This was the most physically demanding thing I've ever done. My heart rate went to dangerous zones and spent a lot of time above its theoretical maximum and I was physically sick.

"After I completed it, I could barely stand, mainly due to cramps in my quadriceps. I was pleased to reach the end.

"The first part was the hardest, with the end feeling so far away, but seeing the end gave me the focus to push forwards. I felt grateful for everyone who had supported me.

It took Max six hours to complete the two miles, thought to be the furthest distance an HGV has been pulled by a human.

Max is no stranger to extreme challenges, in 2019 he completed 1,000 pull ups, carried 200lb up and down Pen-Y-Fan and completed a marathon (26.2 miles) towing a 1.7 tonne car. In 2020 he scaled Garth Mountain with a piano strapped to his back, and most recently in April this year walked 100km carrying 100kg to raise money for the hospitals Covid Appeal.

But he does not do it to break records – only to fundraise for Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals and draw attention to the incredible work the team there does.

"While this was a massive physical effort and an achievement I am proud of, this is really about the team at Royal Brompton and Harefield Hospitals, who are real heroes performing life-changing operations and providing care for their patients, many of whom are going through intense struggles of their own 24/7," said Max.

"The hospitals rely on donations from the public to continue their work fighting heart and lung disease, performing lifesaving operations and supporting patients."

So far Max has raised £462; if you would like to support his 2 Mile Challenge, visit the JustGiving page.
